Learner drivers are requyired to take two tests before they can obtain their full driving licence. The practical driving test and the theory test. You have to pass your theory test before you can apply for a practical test.
The theory test itself is in two parts - a question part and a hazard perception part and you have to pass both parts at the same time. Most theory tests are carried out at dedicated theory test centres. Some intensive driving courses include theory test tuition. Others expect you to have passed the theory test before starting the intensive driving course. Ask your potential crash course instructor whether theory training is included.
Multiple Choice Questions
The first part of the theory test involves 50 multiple choice questions which are done on a touch screen computer. The theory pass mark is 43 out of 50. You can learn for the theory test using books, dvd's and other online resources.
Hazard Perception (HPT)
When you've completed the multiple choice questions, there will be a short delay and then the Hazard perception test will start. The test consists of 14 clips of film in all each lasting approximately 30 or 40 seconds. In total there are 15 developing hazards that you will need to identify. The sooner you identify the scoring hazards, the the more marks you score. You can score a maximum of 5 points per scoring hazard and the pass mark is 44 out of 75.
